Sing a New Song! ; January 3, 2011

Hello... writing new blog posts is obviously a rare thing for me, but sometimes it happens :D Maybe my new year's resolution should be to write on my blog at least once a month. That would be a good one to keep... maybe I can actually do that!

Something I'd like to talk about is worship music... recently, I've been listening to nothing but worship songs! As I fall more and more in love with Jesus every day, I find myself not even caring about secular music anymore. Not that I have anything against it... I still have secular (but clean) music in my iTunes. But I find that it doesn't have any appeal to me anymore. I am passionate about God, and everything else pales in comparison. Eternal pleasures are at God's right hand (Psalm 16:11), and lately I've been realizing that it is more pleasurable to sing praises to God than to listen to secular music, which is commonly considered more pleasurable. And bands that I used to be so obsessed with, like MuteMath and Sigur Ros, really hold no interest for me anymore. Sure, the music sounds cool, but it holds no value - I don't learn anything from it.

But with worship music, I am learning new things about God with every song, that I can actually apply in my life, in how I pray, in how I love God, in what I say to others. I love how God reveals things about Himself to musicians, and I can learn from these songs that musicians create. Each new song is a way for me to express my love for Him in a new way! And it is truly one of my very favorite things in life to learn new things about God, because it is really what I will be doing for the rest of eternity. Loving God is the purpose of my life, after all!

So here are some of my favorite worship albums that I would recommend to anyone wanting to go deeper in passion for Jesus, through worship!

Holy by Cory Asbury and Matt Gilman
This album is full of songs about God's holiness, and about love for Him because of what He has done for us. It really inspires awe in me as I think about how great the Lord is, and how lost and fallen we are, but how amazing God's love is for us that He still sent Jesus for us. The one song that really slammed into me the first time I heard it was "You Made a Way," which is about how God truly made us holy by the work of Jesus.

Relentless by Misty Edwards
Misty Edwards' songs are simply about adoring Jesus. Her songwriting is all about the single purpose of life: loving God. Her music always fills me with a desire to live a life of complete devotion to Him. For me, this album basically introduced me to the truth that Jesus is the bridegroom and we are His bride, and such spiritual growth comes from that revelation!

Heaven & Earth by Phil Wickham
This album is a more recent discovery for me, and I simply can't stop listening to it. I love it. It's all about the return of Jesus, the hope of heaven, and how we will be with God. And let me tell you, thinking about heaven, believing that it is a real place, and anticipating the actual second coming of Christ will give you plenty of fuel in your spiritual life! I also have to admit that I'm a sucker for the synthesizers and digital instruments and techno sound effects in this album... what can I say? I like electronic music :D

Found Faithful by Justin Rizzo
The first time I listened to this album I was overwhelmed because I felt like I had just listened to a dozen short sermons. Each song is so rooted in Scripture, and so deep in biblical truth, that you could listen to just one at a time and spend a while reflecting on what you just learned. I find these lyrics popping up in my head as I go throughout my day, because the truths are so real and applicable. The resounding theme of the album, I think, is a desire to be obedient to God and faithful with what He has given us.

Well, you may have noticed that three of these four albums are from worship leaders at the International House of Prayer in Kansas City. Haha! I love IHOP - so much love for God is expressed in their worship and devotion to biblical truth! And what else would you expect from a group of people who have been dedicated to worship and prayer 24/7 for 10 years!
